Adding to restaurants in Farringdon, London, this newcomer (opened spring 2010) is headed up by a pair of Kiwis whose combined CVs include time with fashionable caterers Urban Caprice and head-cheffing for fellow New Zealander and Pacific Rim godfather, Peter Gordon, at the Providores. Almost instinctively, they have covered about all that's current on the foodie scene in their glass-wrapped corner spot on Exmouth Market. An all-day menu. A combination of snacks, small plates and grown-up main courses (accompanied by a snappy, similarly well-chosen wine list). An Antipodean fastidious about coffee (they roast their own beans in the basement and do proper drip-fed filter for those that sneer at the Americano, with a choice of single-origin coffees to satisfy the most discerning of caffeine geeks). And of course, friendly Kiwi efficiency on the floor, and that know-how in the kitchen - named to reflect the globe-trotting pick'n'mix menu, Caravan mixes Asian with European influences, delivering, for example, Sichuan pepper squid with chilli mayonnaise, veal schnitzel with gypsy potatoes. But it's perhaps at breakfast or over a relaxed weekend brunch that its charms are best appreciated, and its coffee most needed.
