Sketch, still in single figures, is already an international byword for postmodern, contemporary opulence and justly so with an 8-figure sum spent on restorating and decorating its splendid 19th century building, this has become one of the more costly designer cocktail bars in London. Sketch embraces pretension like a transvestite clutching his/her feather boa and should be a highlight on any high-class London bar crawl. Up the main stairs, over which an interior designer has thoughtfully melted a range of different coloured plastics, is one of London's most expensive restaurants (see EAT). Wiser heads stay downstairs for the liquid dinner served in either the Parlour (see SNACK), the Gallery (where a restaurant pops up in the evening and becomes, later still, a drink and dance area), or the East Bar (a round, sunken bar all in full-on sci-fi white and neon). Despite the startling array of design features, the toilets above the East Bar deserve their own special mention - individual white plastic pods that bear a frightening resemblance to the eggs in Aliens. In amongst an ambience of fashionable luxury, there's a top selection of cocktails and the best champagnes and wines money can buy - which is just fine for the moneyed, fashion-conscious Euro crowd that keep Sketch's expensive ball rolling.
